SIR – Sally Hess (Letters, November 28) asks what an “affordable home” costs.

If it is based on the old rule that a mortgage would not be offered at more than three and a half times your salary, then for those on the average UK salary (about £30,000) the maximum mortgage would be £105,000. Assuming a 10 per cent deposit, this would result in an affordable house price of £120,000. Ken Turrell
