Raisins or grapes – the exact reason is unknown but either of these foods can prove extremely toxic to a dog and can be fatal. Cocoa in chocolate (the darker the chocolate, the worse the potential outcome). It contains theobromin­e, a molecule that can flood the brain and cause seizures.

Mince pies and Christmas pudding, due to the raisin content of both.

Alcohol, and food where alcohol has been used in the cooking process (even if it has been cooked off) – dogs cannot process or tolerate alcohol and you may easily poison their system with a very small amount.

Keep the tinsel off the gifts or they may think it’s a sparkly treat. To dogs, tinsel is a glittering tugger rope, but the prickly bits can cause havoc with their insides.
