Cycling safely

-

sir – Hysteria over the compulsory use of helmets by cyclists comes chiefly from non-cyclists.

I’ve cycled safely for over 65 years; the chief reasons for this safety are my use of a rear-view mirror and awareness of the aggression of some motorists. I would sell my bikes if helmets became compulsory.

Riding in the dark without lights is both a serious cycling hazard and illegal. Wearing dark clothes makes this worse.

Why is there no outcry at the police’s failure to enforce the use of lights by cyclists in the dark?

If police cannot enforce this law, or prosecute riding on pavements and jumping traffic lights, why should we add another only for it not to be enforced? Keith Horsfall
