Japan’s Emperor Akihito announces abdication

Japan’s Emperor Akihito, 83, has announced he is to abdicate, for health reasons, as head of what is believed to be the world’s oldest imperial family. His son, Crown Prince Naruhito, 57, will become emperor on May 1, 2018.
