Everyone likes to be generous at Christmas, and not just to those we know and love. Each year we choose three charities for the Telegraph Christmas Charity Appeal that we can see are doing vital work in the most direct and effective way possible.

We look for charities run by people with a passion and utter dedication to their chosen cause. They have a clear vision of what they are doing and urgently require your assistance.

We always ensure a balance between our three chosen charities in the hope every reader will be able to find at least one they feel particularly passionate about.
