Apples supersized by late frost arrive on supermarket shelves

-

♦ If you’ve noticed some whopping apples on the supermarket shelves recently, blame the late frost.

Morrisons is selling a crop of British Braeburns that farmers say have been supersized by unusual weather conditions. Late frosts across the UK in April meant fewer apples grew, with as much as 10 per cent of the British Braeburn crop affected.

However, according to Morrisons, farmers then found that the reduced crop had grown to more than twice the size and weight of the norm.

Weighing in at an average of 16oz, the apples dwarf the typical Braeburn at 6oz, and will be the biggest apple the chain has sold in living memory.
