Confidence in London’s future is on the rise
sir – While walking across Waterloo Bridge in glorious sunshine last month, I was struck by the wonderful views across London.
There has always been much to see here, but I was astonished by the speed with which huge new buildings are now springing up, largely in exciting modern glass designs. There is a new tower at Bishopsgate and a remarkable building near The Shard, as well as an enormous development just by Waterloo station.
Furthermore, I understand that plans and investment for a spread of further high-rise buildings are well under way in the development of the North Greenwich peninsula, which would join up the impressive urban skyline of Canary Wharf with the City itself.
Whatever is happening in the rest of the country, the extraordinary sight of so many huge cranes towering above this whole area, all hard at work, is an indication of overall business confidence and progressive investment in the future relevance of the City, as well as the importance of London as a worldwide hub post-brexit.
If Project Fear’s warnings had been correct, then London’s skyline would be very much less interesting than it is now.
