THE IMPACT ALL CHANGE? LA
Bianca Jagger (brokering a magnificent pact between the walking cane she is never without, and the humongous platforms sandals she was wearing) presented the Positive Change Award to Maria Grazia Chiuri for making feminism one of the most glamorous conscious raising issues on the block at Dior. Stella Mccartney won the Innovation Award for her sustainability programmes. These two prizes didn’t exist a couple of years ago, so efforts are being made to ensure this isn’t simply a fluffy backslapping event (last year’s ceremony also raised £750,00 to help fashion students struggling to make ends meet).
Awards also oil the wheels of business – Craig Green, winner of Best Menswear Designer, said that if it hadn’t been for winning a newcomer award last year, he wouldn’t have a label anymore.
That said, the awards could be braver. Monday’s event made no reference to the storm of allegations about sexual abuse and mistreatment of models (that’s before we come to the exploitation of interns). Fair enough – it’s a celebration. But a nod to the whistleblowing of the model Cameron Russell would have been a positive acknowledgment that much more needs to transform. As Stella Mccartney told The
Telegraph backstage: “Every other industry on the planet is moving forward and is an agent for change, and the fashion industry – we’re supposed to lead that stuff, not just concern ourselves with colour and silhouette.”
