Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany “does not support” Mr Trump’s position, adding that Jerusalem’s status must be part of a two-state solution. France

President Emmanuel Macron said: “France does not approve; it goes against internatio­nal law.”

Canada The foreign minister said Jerusalem’s status can be resolved “only as part of a general settlement of the Palestinia­nisraeli dispute”.

Qatar Its foreign minister said the decision was a “dangerous escalation and death sentence for peace”.

Turkey Mr Trump was “plunging the region and the world into a fire with no end in sight” said Bekir Bozdağ, deputy prime minister.

Lebanon “This threatens the peace process and stability of the region.”

Jordan King Abdullah II said it would have “dangerous repercussi­ons on the stability and security of the region”.

UN Antonio Guterres, the Secretaryg­eneral, said: “In this moment of great anxiety, I want to make it clear: there is no alternativ­e to the two-state solution.”

Palestine The president, Mahmoud Abbas, said the US had just abdicated its role for peace.
