Personal and material rewards of a part-time job

-

sir – In 1967 our daughter was

13 and had a Saturday job (Letters, December 6) in a local materials shop.

After three weeks, she announced: “I’m learning a little about materials and a lot about people.” I think that says it all. She went on to achieve a degree in food science and biochemistry, leading to a useful and rewarding career.

Surely Saturday jobs are a vital part of education.

sir – Aged 16, I had a Saturday job in a department store in Plymouth.

I was a lift girl and during quiet periods I would stop the lift between floors and get my books out to do some revision for my O-levels, until called back to work by the buzzer. Carol Cuffe

sir – Having had our Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph delivered to us for 40 years by the same shop, we now learn that the service will cease at the end of this month.

The stated reason is a lack of delivery people. It seems the times have gone when there was a waiting list of children eager to supplement their pocket money.
