Returning jihadists

sir – Gavin Williamson, the Defence Secretary, is correct about the threat of fighters from Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) seeking to return to this country, and right to declare that such people should be killed (report, December 7).

Those who joined Isil made a conscious decision to take up arms against Britain. Indeed, we are told that many of them were exceptional students before they went to Syria, so their decisions were well-informed.

We live in difficult times and money is limited. However, the safety of the public is the first duty of government. The threat we face, and the perverted ideology that fuels it, are clear. Michael Pearson
