sir – A few days ago I received a letter from a firm offering a home plan for gas and electricity. It was addressed to “Dear Unknown Boiler Owner”.

I can understand that “Dear Sir or Madam” probably sounds outdated, but surely something like “Dear Homeowner” would have been preferable. Marian Turnbull
