Clandon Park 2.0
SIR – I have received an email from the National Trust, of which I am a supporter, reporting on the winner of the design competition for rebuilding Clandon Park (report, December 7).
The plan is appalling. It shows, in one corner of the property, a starkly modern staircase and walkway bearing no relation to the location or appearance of the original staircase. This leads up to a gallery space. At the top is a roof terrace café with a light well in the middle.
All these would be fine in a modern gallery, but are totally inappropriate in this case and pay no regard to what was – and could be again – a fine example of a Georgian country house.
The National Trust should be the guardians of the nation’s past. I urge all those who consider that the Trust has forgotten its purpose to register their objections. Ian Yonge
