Defeating those annoying phone calls on trains

-

SIR – I understand it is possible to fit invisible film to the windows and doors of railway quiet carriages (Letters, December 8) to prevent phone signals from being picked up. This would, however, cost operators money and take time to implement.

My own remedy for unbearable aural disturbances is to join in the mobile phone conversation. That usually brings the phone call to a halt.

Rev Simon Douglas Lane

Hampton, Middlesex SIR – As a train guard on services without quiet carriages, I sympathise with Laura Freeman’s exasperation at noise-polluters in public spaces (Comment, December 7).

I frequently have to encourage, pass judgment and enforce etiquette, politeness and decency as a minority of passengers push the boundaries into nuisance and annoyance.
