Brother detained for calling judge ‘mate’ apologises

-

A BEREAVED brother was sent to a court cell for addressing a judge as “mate” during the sentence hearing of a driver who killed his sister.

Antony Dickinson, 24, interrupted yesterday’s hearing when he entered the Hull Crown Court room late.

When challenged, he told Judge Jeremy Richardson: “I am just showing my respect, mate. I am here for my Mum and Dad. I am here for my baby sister.” The judge said he would not be addressed as “mate” and sent him briefly to the cells for “smirking as if it was some kind of joke”.

But Mr Dickinson later returned and apologised for his behaviour when brought back to the courtroom. He was let off and escorted from the premises.

The court was told how Benjamin Bowden, 19, was behind the wheel of a VW polo when it crashed, killing Levi Dickinson, 16, and Rhogan Jones, 17.

Earlier, he admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two of causing death by careless driving near a crossroads in East Yorkshire last February. The judge adjourned the case for a GP’S report and Bowden, of Goole, East Yorks, was released on bail for sentencing on Dec 20.
