Anger as council plans to fell war memorial trees
More than 40 war memorial trees will be cut down after a council said it would cost £500,000 to save them.
The trees were planted in Western Road, Sheffield, to mark the sacrifice of men who went to a primary school on the street. However, Sheffield City councillors decided that the 41 trees are damaging roads and property and will have to be “replaced”.
The Green Party described the decision is “insensitive”.
Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for the environment, said the council “simply cannot justify” spending the £500,000 needed to save the trees.
