Mueller ‘unlawfully received’ emails
A LAWYER for Donald Trump’s transition team has alleged that special counsel Robert Mueller unlawfully received tens of thousands of emails, in an attack on the credibility of the probe into Russian meddling in the US election.
With the investigation making inroads into the president’s inner circle, Republicans have pressed for an independent prosecutor to investigate antitrump bias. This has led to speculation the administration could be preparing to fire Mr Mueller.
In a letter to congressional committees, Kory Langhofer, a Trump campaign lawyer, said the General Services Administration (GSA) “unlawfully produced” private materials which Mr Mueller used as part of his Russia probe. GSA is the agency which supports presidential transitions.
Mr Langhofer wrote that Mr Mueller’s office “received from the GSA tens of thousands of emails, including a very significant volume of privileged material”. The lawyer claimed that a warrant should have been obtained for such materials.
Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mr Mueller, told CNN: “When we have obtained emails in the course of our ongoing investigation, we have secured either the account owner’s consent or appropriate criminal process.”
