The natural hormones that can make muscles grow

-

Q What are testosterone and human growth hormones?

A Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone which regulates fertility, muscle mass, fat distribution and red blood cell production. Synthetic derivatives are known as “anabolic steroids” and promote the growth of muscle and bone, as well as enhancing male characteristics. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the pituitary gland. It contributes to the repair and regeneration of bone, muscle, tendons and ligaments.

Q Why would athletes use the drugs?

A Athletes may use testosterone as part of a hormone replacement therapy or to increase performance beyond normal levels. HGH can make muscles grow and allows quicker recovery but it is unclear whether it improves the strength of muscles.

Q What do the rules say?

A Anabolic agents such as testosterone, and HGH are “prohibited at all times” under S1 and S2 of the Wada anti-doping code.

Q Are they against the law?

A Anabolic steroids and HGH are both Class-c drugs in the UK under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It is illegal for pharmacists to sell them without a prescription. It is legal to possess for personal use and may be imported into the UK, but only on an individual’s person.

In the US anabolic steroids are a Schedule III drug, meaning it is illegal to possess and distribute without a prescription. HGH is banned except for a few medical conditions. It is a felony to possess or deal HGH.
