Grenfell reviewer says building rules not fit for purpose
A CULTURE of “cutting corners” and avoiding responsibility has resulted in a system of high-rise building regulation that is “not fit for purpose”.
Dame Judith Hackitt, who is leading a review into building regulations and fire safety after 71 people died in the Grenfell Tower fire, has called for a change in culture to ensure people stop “cutting corners” and focus on “doing the right thing instead”.
In evidence to the communities and local government committee, Dame Judith said she had identified “numerous areas in which the system is gamed” as it is overly complex and lacks clear roles and responsibilities.
She added that stronger enforcement and sanctions are required.
