Use website filters to find the real bargains, says Caroline Leaper

How she shops: One of my favourite things about shopping the sales online, rather than in-store, is that some websites allow you to sort products by “discounts: high to low”. It’s an instant way to filter the real bargains from the vanity savings (who in this world thinks that 10per cent off is a steal?) and on designer sites like Matchesfashion.com, I think it makes it that bit clearer that, yes, that Isabel Marant belted jacket (50per cent off), or Jwanderson’s Knot bag (40per cent off) are now entirely worth the investment.

Top tip: On the high street websites, I filter by “original price: high to low”. That way, all the premium quality pieces (think limited edition stuff like H&M’S silk-based Conscious Collection) will float to the top of the page with their newly-lowered price tags, and the seemingly endless scroll of cheap tights, odd bikini bottoms, and neon plastic necklaces will sink to the bottom. That last part is actually the downside to sales season – when the treasure has been pillaged and all that’s left is the dregs – and it’s usually all over by Jan 3.
