Laurent Wauquiez, 42, won 75 per cent of the vote on Dec 10 to become party leader of Les Républicai­ns. Critics claim this was more due to a lack of credible rivals than his own popularity, and that he will find it hard to attract voters outside the party faithful.

He positioned himself on a Catholic traditiona­list, Euroscepti­c platform, which irked party moderates.
