Dangerous drivers

- Michael Bird

sir – Speed alone does not kill (Letters, December 20); it’s inappropriate speed that does.

Quite rightly, learners are taught the rudiments of safe driving, but there should be a far greater emphasis on “safe thinking”.

Driving is more than just pointing a vehicle in the right direction and hoping. I have seen cars driven in supermarket car parks at more than 40mph, the drivers giving no thought to mothers with toddlers.

It is no surprise that accidents have increased in 20mph zones. Too much time can be spent looking at the speedometer and not at the road.

sir – My son was killed while crossing the road by a car being driven at 30mph.

I sometimes wonder if he would have survived had the car been going at 20mph.
