Changing look From glowering to glowing

Standing ramrod straight, with crossed arms, pursed lips and a defiant, almost aggressive stare, Prince Philip struck a remarkably different pose to that of his grandson in his engagement photograph.

In 1947, the engagement of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was accompanied with a black and white portrait of the young couple in which there was noticeably no physical contact.

However, another was released showing the future Queen wearing a demure dress with a nipped-in waist, linking arms with her beloved and gazing up at him from a chair.

In 1981, the official engagement photographs of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer showed Diana with her arms about the shoulders of her future husband.

Until now, the most informal photographs have come from Prince William and Kate Middleton, who embraced in a hug for Mario Testino’s lens. A second picture, taken inside the palace, sees them standing and leaning with their heads together.
