The last straw as village goes plastic-free
♦ A Scottish village has become the first in the UK to ban plastic straws.
All 14 bars, restaurants and cafés in the Ullapool, Wester Ross, are now using non-plastic alternatives, or have stopped offering drinking straws.
The town’s supermarket has now agreed to stop stocking plastic straws early in 2018, the final outlet to do so.
In September, pupils from Ullapool Primary School joined forces with Glasgow’s Sunnyside Primary School to lobby local businesses. The children were supported by Noel Hawkins, the Scottish Wildlife Trusts’s living seas communities officer.
