Britain’s global allies
SIR – In light of the uncertainty around Brexit negotiations and timings, now is the time to be looking at global opportunities and markets outside the European Union to ensure that British companies continue to thrive.
Qatar, one of our key allies, has invested £35 billion in the UK and has plans for another £5 billion. Britain is Qatar’s top destination for foreign direct investment. British exports of goods to Qatar rose from £1.31 billion in 2013 to £2.13 billion in 2016.
Qatar also supplies 30 per cent of UK gas imports, making it vital for our energy infrastructure. Energy production per head in Qatar dwarfs the other Gulf countries. The Qatari government is using the revenue generated to diversify its economy.
Consequently, Qatar plans to invest up to £140 billion in infrastructure over the next seven years. This is a significant opportunity for British business. Qatar should also form closer links with Britain in financial technology. As a global leader in that area, we can help to turn Qatar into a regional hub of entrepreneurship for its youth.
