Assault charge for sumo champion

Prosecutors have charged Harumafuji, the former sumo grand champion, with assaulting a junior wrestler, law enforcement officers in Tottori, western Japan, said.

An apologetic Harumafuji retired last month after injuring fellow Mongolian wrestler Takanoiwa while drinking at a bar with other wrestlers in Tottori.

The charge is seen as a move to secure payment of fines rather than a trial.
