Dad and daughter? No, it’s the leader of Ukip and his new girlfriend

-

My first thought when I saw the picture of Henry Bolton and Jo Marney was this: why has a photo of a grinning dad alongside his daughter made the front page?

I presumed that he had won the Lottery like that nice taxi driver with the five girls. Then I read the caption: “Bolton, 54, is leader of Ukip”. Who knew? Not me – I usually just wait for Nigel to get back in. But that’s not even the story. The politician has swapped his 42-year-old wife, and the mother of two of his children, for party activist and member Marney, 25, who claims to be a model and actress.

To a sad sack middle-aged man, that probably does sound like hitting the jackpot. Yet it’s not only tawdry, but weird.

According to pollsters Yougov, 46per cent of all UK voters are over 50. The figure for Ukip is 71per cent. So why in Brexit’s name would a peroxide, hot pantswearing 25-yearold want to become a member of the oldest party in town? I have no idea, but presumably Bolton has.
