One day we will thank Weinstein, says Streep

- By Harriet Alexander in New York

MERYL STREEP has said the world may one day thank Harvey Weinstein and Donald Trump for exposing systemic flaws in Hollywood and Washington.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph today, Streep, who publicly clashed with the US president last year, said: “In a way we’re all going to have to thank Donald Trump for securing the executive branch of our government. We’re going to find where all the weaknesses are. And we’re going to have to thank Harvey Weinstein for a moment where the door just got blown open.

“And it’s kind of great. It’s kind of great that it’s happened. It’s horrible for the people that sacrificed along the way. But it’s almost like they went to war, these girls who stood up. And they took the bullets. And it’s good.” Streep, 68, has been attacked by Rose Mcgowan, one of the first women to accuse the disgraced film mogul, for not doing more to stop him. But Streep insists she was unaware of his alleged behaviour. More than 70 women have come forward with allegations against Weinstein, which he denies.
