Top actors should play second fiddle to women, argues Pike

-

 Male actors should help win equality for women in Hollywood by volunteering to take supporting roles for female leads, Rosamund Pike has said.

The British actress said men must be willing to play “second fiddle” to their female co-stars.

Speaking on The Film Programme on BBC Radio 4, Pike – who is currently starring in Hostiles with Christian Bale – argued that real change in the industry would come from actors themselves.

She said men were currently more likely to accept a supporting role only if another man was leading the film. “Male actors now have to decide that they are willing to play supporting roles to female leads,” she said. “And often it seems men don’t want to.

“They’re more than happy to play a supporting role to Christian Bale – another man – less happy to play supporting roles to a lead woman.”
