Blair ignores the autocratic nature of the EU
SIR – Tony Blair’s 32-page blueprint for stopping Brexit (report, January 5) fails to examine one crucial element that drove many to vote Leave last year: that there is no official opposition to EU rule.
It is an autocracy of the kind that has never sat well with most of the British people, who feel they have become helpless tools of a power that dictates. For all his cant, Mr Blair will never change that.
Surely it would be more constructive if he wrote a document showing how the EU could fill the budget black hole left by Brexit, by beginning to tackle the cost of direct and indirect fraud and corruption. This is calculated at £782 billion a year – a figure published in a report by the European Parliament just before the June referendum. This alone secured my vote to leave. Richard Cromwell

SIR – When you remove his eloquent semantics, Tony Blair, like many modern liberals, simply wants his own way and, regardless of the referendum result, believes he has an unquestionable right to have it. Geoffrey Tuffs
