Duchess’s uncle returns to wife after drunken attack on her
GARY GOLDSMITH, the Duchess of Cambridge’s uncle, has reconciled with his wife after he was convicted of attacking her during a drunken row.
The couple had been estranged since the incident in October, but made up during a New Year’s Eve party at his villa in Ibiza. Mr Goldsmith, 52, narrowly avoided jail in November when he was handed a 12 month community order for the attack on Julie-ann, 48, outside their London home.
Emma Arbuthnot, the chief magistrate, also fined him £5,000 and ordered him to attend an alcohol rehabilitation programme.
He was described as a “mean, nasty drunk” during the case, but Westmin- ster magistrates’ court also heard how the millionaire businessman remained devoted to his wife and hoped that with the help of counselling they could be reconciled. Since then he had reportedly been staying in a hotel as he sought to patch things up with his wife.
But Mr Goldsmith confirmed that they got back together over New Year and were working to make their relationship work. It is understood the pair spent the holiday with friends.
Mr Goldsmith, who is the brother of Carole Middleton, the Duchess’s mother, was arrested after punching his wife on their way home from a night out. He was banned from contacting his wife and was threatened with a restraining order.
