Rhiannon Beattie, 35, from Shropshire, lived with her ex-husband for a year after they decided to end their five-year marriage. “There were a lot of reasons at the time – money being one of them,” she said.

Ms Beattie, who works for a healthcare agency, did not co-own the home she shared with her ex-husband, so was concerned about leaving.

“It was only because my mum and dad were able to lend me some money that I was able to move out,” she said.
