Friday Night Is Music Night

RADIO 2, 8.00PM

Witches, Wizards, Magic and Spells is the theme for this week’s Friday Night Is Music Night, presented by twin brothers James and Oliver Phelps, who played the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter films. The concert includes music by all four Potter film composers – Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, Alexandre Desplat and, of course, John Williams – plus there’s also a dose of other magic inspired music such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, The Firebird and songs from Wicked, The Little Mermaid and The Wizard of Oz.

The Essay: Cornerstones RADIO 3, 10.45PM

The Essay’s week-long look at the significance of particular rocks and how they affect places and people concludes tonight with the poet Fiona Hamilton. Hamilton discusses the different states of clay, from its tactile quality of soft, mouldable clay, which has myriad uses in art and sculpture, to the mundane daily utilitarian function of clay bricks and their essential role in building houses. Hamilton also explores how they underpinned the Industrial Revolution, enabling the rapid construction of factories and the bridges.
