SIR – It has been suggested that there should be cross-party co-operation on the future direction of the NHS.

SIR – Dr John Garside (Letters, January 13) says that the NHS is a service not a manufacturing industry for “bureaucratic” counting and calculating purposes.
Whatever the future funding and organisational philosophy there is no escaping that people and money are resources requiring constant management.
The Public Accounts Committee has just called for “government to set out for the first time a properly integrated business planning, budgeting and performance system that endures”.
Is there anyone in the Treasury who is qualified to perform such an operation? Peter Webb
