SIR – Early one Sunday morning, some friends were woken by a phone call from their gap-year son.

He hoped that by holding his mobile phone (Letters, January 13) close to the engine of his camper van, which had broken down a few miles north of Brisbane, his father would be able to diagnose the cause of its loss of power. Colin Henderson
