M25 could run in tunnel under Heathrow runway
Britain’s busiest motorway could be buried in a tunnel 23ft below a third runway at Heathrow, the airport has announced.
The airport suggests in a consultation that the 12-lane M25 should be moved 490ft (150m), with part of it running through a tunnel.
Heathrow could also cut the length of the runway from 11,600ft (3,500m to 10,500ft (3,200m) under the plans, and claims it can complete the project for £14billion. Willie Walsh, the boss of British Airways’ parent company IAG, has urged the Government to make Heathrow provide a breakdown of its expansion costs to ensure passengers are not ripped off.
