Big freeze breaks the thermometer

A thermometer that became a tourist attraction in “the coldest inhabited place on Earth” has broken because it could not handle the cold.

Displaying temperatures consistently below minus 40C in Oymyakon, Siberia, it yesterday recorded minus 62C before malfunctioning. Locals recorded minus 67C.

Moscow, meanwhile, enjoyed just six minutes of sunshine throughout the whole of December.
