Neglecting potholes ‘puts lives at risk’
COUNCILS have been accused of putting people’s lives at risk after it emerged that last year the amount spent on fixing potholes on minor roads fell to its lowest level for more than a decade.
Maintenance spending on B roads, C roads and unclassified routes in 2004-05 was £2.46billion but that fell to £1.87billion in 2016-17.
The AA said: “Most journeys start and end on local roads, we should not neglect local streets. Potholes have contributed towards at least three cyclist deaths. Downgrading of inspection and repairs introduces a new level of potential lethality.”
