Grateful patients raise funds to back disgraced liver surgeon
A fundraising campaign has been launched in support of a surgeon who admitted burning his initials on to the livers of two transplant patients.
On the fundraising page entitled Save Our Surgeon: Bring Back Simon Bramhall Appeal, two former patients state: “We are the patients, our families, together with friends and colleagues of Simon Bramhall. It is absolutely incredible to see us all together, realising how many of us would not be here if not for the brilliance of this man, who has dedicated his life to his work.
“We want him to continue to do this for others; to save more lives.”
The page aims to raise £10,000 for the British Liver Trust, to be donated in Bramhall’s name.
The fundraising page states: “We are aiming to match Simon’s fine of £10,000 and donate this to his chosen charity, the British Liver Trust.
“This in no way conflicts with the fine that Simon pays himself.”
Bramhall, 53, resigned from Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2014 after another surgeon found “SB” branded on a failed donor liver, the city’s Crown Court was told.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating last month. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, told to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and fined £10,000.
