Cathedral’s gender-neutral lavatories
A cathedral is believed to have become the first in Britain to install gender-neutral lavatories.
St Asaph, in North Wales, has built the transgender-friendly lavatories in a £300,000 revamp.
Seven cubicles with floor-to-ceiling doors have been supplied. A spokesman for the the diocese of St Asaph said: “It is not about faith, it is about being more accepting and not putting up any boundaries or barriers.
“It also helps lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups as well, people who are transitioning – there is no issue at all.”
The diocese was the first in the UK to launch a dedicated chaplaincy for the LGBT community.
The Very Rev Nigel Williams, the dean of St Asaph Cathedral, said: “We’ve already had lots of positive feedback, particularly from dads who can accompany their young daughters to the lavatories, from older couples who act as carers for each other, and from the LGBTQIA+ community.”
