Think again before switching car colours
sir – You report (January 15) that black has replaced white as Britain’s most popular car colour.
I have just got a new car and chose black as a change from my previous white one. Disastrous: it shows every mark and always looks dirty.
Be warned. Back to white next time.

sir – You ascribe the popularity of black cars to drivers being too busy to wash them.
I have always followed my grandfather’s maxim: “Never buy a black car unless you can afford to employ a chauffeur.” In my experience, metallic beige is the most suitable colour for the impecunious, busy or indolent. Philip Barber

sir – I have a black car. My wife’s is white. We do similar mileage on similar roads. I wash both of them, and my wife’s white one stays cleaner far longer than mine. She says it’s because she drives slower.
After 50 years of driving I can say the easiest colour to keep clean is silver-grey
