Tapestry censors

SIR – Elaine Voyce (Letters, January 18) reminds us of the splendid copy of the Bayeux Tapestry in Reading Museum.

But it is not an exact replica. At one point in the lower margin of the original, naked men are shown in full-frontal glory; in the copy, the sensitive ladies of Leek chose to clad them in what must be the Victorian equivalent of Y-fronts. E D Davidson
