Even after its surprising shutout in this year’s Bafta nominations, Steven Spielberg’s journalism procedural is no less a film of the moment. An agile and impassioned retelling of the 1971 Pentagon Papers affair, which pitted values of transparency and truth against the paranoid ranter (Nixon) in the White House, it rings bells left and right. It also features Meryl Streep’s finest and subtlest work in years as the publisher who made a difference, and a tremendous Tom Hanks as her bristly newsroom chief.
