HB flies to Vienna for Christmas with wife Tatiana Smurova and daughters.

Dec 20

HB: “We had some very difficult conversati­ons. I had been asked to write an article. She said, ‘no, you are here with us, you are not here to work’.” TS: “I had a high fever but he went off to a café to work, so I told him, ‘could you please be with us because I’m not even able to take care of the little ones’. He said, ‘look, just because you are unwell the world does not stop’.”

HB: “There’s too much tension here, you’re compromisi­ng my leadership, we’re having personal difficulti­es, my resilience has worn out. I’m going.” TS: “He announced to me that he was going to go back... I said, ‘Are you leaving us?’ and he said, ‘No, no, no.’”

HB meets JM in a pub: “Our relationsh­ip started that day.”

TS: “There was a text message I received from him saying... he was leaving a restaurant the day before and was photograph­ed with a woman... and there is speculatio­n of an affair. I [asked] whether he had anything with that woman. He said yes.”

Jan 3

HB writes to party members: “In recent weeks, I’ve had a change in my relationsh­ip status... This isn’t something that I’ve hidden.”

Jan 5

HB tells journalist­s: “My wife is fully aware of what’s been going on and has been abroad since July.”

TS: “The first time he called me... He said ‘can we talk in a couple of days?’ and I said OK.”

Jan 10

HB: “My marriage has been in a difficult situation for a number of years. Let’s be very clear about this – before the relationsh­ip with Jo we had serious problems in the marriage and I had already told her that as far as I was concerned I had had enough.”

Jan 18

TS: “We were hoping this year I’d finally be able to go and join him in the UK... I have not heard from his mouth that everything is over and we should separate and divorce.”
