Cheesed off: Stilton contest is cancelled

-

A CHEESE rolling festival at the home of Stilton has been abandoned, as organisers say no one cares anymore and that under-age drinking has become a problem.

The annual contest in Cambridgeshire features teams rolling wheels of the blue cheese along a road. It has been run since the mid20th century.

However, the Stilton Community Association has now announced that the 2018 event will not go ahead, citing a “lack of interest”.

Other reasons given for the cancellation include claims that the “atmosphere has changed” and that “public order is now an issue to be dealt with”.

“In the past, Cheese Rolling had the reputation of being a pleasant, family friendly day out. In recent years, the atmosphere has changed and the issue of under-age drinking has threatened our safety,” the announcement on Facebook states.

Many of those who posted responses to the announcement expressed their disappointment.

Ann Hawkins said: “Such a shame, I remember the fun of the cheese rolling. Another tradition gone but thank you for all your hard work anyway.”
