Teletubbies’ Tinky Winky performer dies suddenly at 52
THE man who played Tinky Winky in the Teletubbies has died at the age of 52. Family and friends said Simon Shelton, also known as Simon Barnes, died last week, four days after his birthday.
Shelton, a father of three who lived in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, was well known for his role as the handbag-toting purple Teletubby, but he trained as a dancer and choreographer.
Henry, his son, wrote on Facebook: “I lost my lovely dad on Wednesday, he was the kindest and most gentle man I knew and I love him more than anything!!!
“I always used to be embarrassed as a child that he was a dancer and an actor but now I couldn’t be more proud!
“He is in a better place now and I know he wouldn’t want me to be sad, so I’m going to live my life the way he would want me to.”
His niece, Emily Atack, the Inbetweeners actress, posted a tribute on Instagram, writing: “My wonderful uncle Simon Barnes has been taken from us all so suddenly. The kindest and most talented man you could ever wish to meet. Loved by all who knew him, and will be forever. X.”
John Simmit, the actor who played Dipsy, the green Teletubby, tweeted: “What a week! RIP Simon Shelton aka Tinky Winky: remembering the many good times. Rest easy.”
The production company that Mr Shelton worked with when he was on Teletubbies, Ragdoll, has said everyone he worked with thought he was a “lovely, lovely man”.
Mr Shelton’s funeral will be held at Bedford Crematorium on Feb 7. Those attending have been asked to wear bright colours.
