‘Father of South African jazz’ dies from cancer
Hugh Masekela, the South African musician, has died at the age of 78.
Often called the “Father of South African jazz”, he died in Johannesburg after what his family said was a “protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer”.
A trumpeter, singer and composer, Masekela starting playing the horn at the age of 14 and used his music to spread awareness of apartheid.
