Birds of war

-

SIR – I was interested to see that a wartime carrier pigeon named Mary has been honoured with a blue plaque in Exeter (report, January 22).

We have a blue plaque in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, for a carrier pigeon that served in the Second World War. Commando carried out more than 90 missions and received the Dickin Medal for three particularly notable missions in 1942.

Commando was bred in Haywards Heath by Sid Moon. The blue plaque is displayed on the building with the loft in which the bird was born. Lorraine Tennett
