Artificial intelligence may help win convictions
Police are considering using AI to help investigate the vast amount of evidence available on digital devices.
Last year, almost 1,000 people had charges dropped because police failed to disclose crucial material during criminal investigations.
Senior police leaders have acknowledged that there is a systemic problem with the current process, but claim the sheer volume of material that is now available on mobile phones, tablets and computers, is making the job of analysing it virtually impossible.
One solution suggested is using the latest AI technology to interrogate digital devices for relevant evidence.
