SIR – Sainsbury’s and Tesco have embarked on operationa­l cost-cutting by reducing surplus non-producing staff and streamlini­ng their middle management – often areas that get out of control in any organisati­on and can become a high cost. This exercise allows for a better use of cash and a more effective workforce.
